# Steps and zoom

> How many steps your signal has, and how close you see them.

Two different things, side by side in the header: **how many steps** the project
has, and **how big** you see them.

## Step count

`Steps: [−] [16] [+] [🔒]`

| Control | What it does                                           | Shortcut   |
| ------- | ------------------------------------------------------ | ---------- |
| `−`     | Removes a step. **Hold it down** and it keeps removing | `−`        |
| Field   | Type the number directly                               |            |
| `+`     | Adds a step. **Hold it down** and it keeps adding      | `+` or `=` |
| Padlock | Freezes the step count                                 |            |

A new project starts with **16**. You change it in General Settings (*Initial
number of steps*), and each mode keeps its own.

### Other ways to add steps

* **Dragging with the right button** past the end of the signal: the missing
  steps are created up to where you release.
* **Pasting** or **inserting a template** longer than what is there.

<Tip>
  If the right drag creates steps by accident, turn it off in General Settings →
  *Right drag creates pulses*. With "No", that drag only moves the view.

### The padlock

Close the padlock once the signal length is settled and you do not want to
stretch it by accident. With it on:

* You cannot **delete** or **insert** steps.
* You cannot **insert or unfold templates**.
* The right drag does not create steps.

The buttons tell you why: *"Unlock the step count to delete or insert steps"*.

### Fit (analog only)

The **Fit** button in the header trims the empty steps **on both sides** and
leaves only the signal on screen.

It exists only in analog because a digital signal is worth something at every
step —low, if you did not touch it— while the analog one exists only between its
first point and its last.

Do not confuse it with *Fit zoom*, which does not touch the step count.

## Zoom

<Tip>
  `Z` is the shortcut you will use most. After adding a hundred steps or pasting a
  long signal, it gives you the full view back in one keystroke.

## Moving around the signal

* **Mouse wheel** and the scroll bar.
* **Right-button drag** over the timeline.
* If you drag a selection to the edge of the screen, the view follows on its
  own, faster the closer to the edge you are.
